TwoThousingTen!

Woah, doesn't that sound like the future? More so than usual, I mean. I haven't felt this much in need of a jetpack since it turned two thousand (this is the first decade I've been entirely conscious of, my memory kicks in around 1993, a combination of my sister being born and the dinosaurs of jurassic park)

I thought I'd do one of those cliche, look back on the past year, look forward to the next year sorta blog posts.

What a pile of epic times 2009 has been!

This year has been the up and downiest year I've ever had, my goodness!

Career wise, it's been fairly positive. I had a new book come out in February, 'Cupcakes of Doom' and it has sold pretty well. Paid off it's own print run costs, as well as the printing costs of the previous book, 'Another Dirt Sandwich' which debuted the year before, right when the economy collapsed, and sold very poorly.

I also came up with two new sets of concepts and characters, that I think are going to be very contributing factors in me being famous. One of which is still a secret mystery to you, SHH! But the other I'm hoping you're familiar with: Pirate Penguin vs Ninja Chicken!

I created them originally intended for Nickelodeon Magazine, I had been in chats with one of their comic editors, Chris, for a number of years. He always had always liked my work, but kept saying "It's too complicated. Come up with something simple, not too many characters, and you're a shoe-in!"
And so I mused for a bit, and came up with something very simple and very me. I have drawn penguins my whole life, they're sorta my thing (way before the modern day penguin explosion happened, sure there were penguin characters before me, but I still feel I kinda pushed them into their present day popularity. We'll never know I suppose.)

I've also been drawing pirates for a while, I find myself in sympathy with their sense of flamboyance. I combined the two (something that should have occurred to me years ago, and BING! I had my most iconic character ever! Then I threw in a Ninja Chicken, cuz it seemed like the thing to do.

I was originally going for a very 'spy vs spy' sorta feel, but my love of dialogue and bickering reared it's head, and, well, if you're familiar with the comic, that's all you need to know really.

I showed them to Chris, he liked them very much. they work months ahead of the game, so it looked quite thumbs up they'd be in the November issue. Hooray!

And then, 3 days later, Viacom announced that they were shutting down Nickelodeon Magazine. Chris himself found out via the press release. Hooroors! Talk about bad luck/timing/arglebargle.

This is where the roller coaster, uppedy downedy fashion of the year comes into play.

I've been doing my own thing with the characters, we'll see what happens next. We got plush toys made, that is such a cool feeling, seeing cartoons you invented made real.

Well, there's my career in a nutshell for you! The other big area of my life would be my personal life, and so, here it is.

In February, in Hawaii, on and around valentines day, I broke up with my first and only long time, long distance girlfriend. That kind of sucked, kinda really sucked.

Little things were causing the relationship to turn sour. We didn't see eye to eye on a couple very important issues, and I felt like the only way we could be happy was if one of us got some kind of personality transplant. That isn't fair to anybody. Plus, with a long distance relationship, waiting 6 months to hug and kiss a person is hard. It's better than nothing, certainly, which is pretty much what I've had since, but, there you are.

I've got some regrets, a good chunk of guilt, and I certainly miss her, and the thoughts of what I thought our life would be like together, I think ultimately I made the right choice. It's better to be lonely that with the wrong person. She's moved on (annoyingly, found an awesome new boyfriend who lives right nearby. I don't begrudge her finding a source of comfort, but I can't claim not to be jealous I haven't been able to find similar.)
I'm ready to move on. Actively trying to find new friends and social groups, hopefully meet some new people.

Anybody reading this who wants to hook me up with any of their friends, feel free : ) I promise to be charming and wonderful, as you well know.

And that is the end of my complaining about this subject. I've been talking about it rather endlessly, to pretty much anyone who'd listen. And since most of you reading this are friends of mine, I promise you've heard the last of it from me. I fear becoming 2 dimensional, and being 'complaining about his ex-guy' is certainly incredibly boring. Forgive me, and thank you for the loan of your shoulder.

This has been hard, one of the most painful things that has ever happened to me, but I think I'm over the worst of it. You're all awesome.

I really have made a ton of friends this year, more so than in any year before. I've made probably a dozen good friends. Sadly, the nearest is 2 hours away from me, but then, that's what the internet is for, keeping in touch. I got more christmas cards this year than my parents, it was awesome. You all know who you are, and I give you many many hugs, you have a great taste in friends to be friends with me (hee hee hee. My ego is second to none you know!)

Also this year, I got to meet Terry Pratchett, my favorite author that was pretty darn cool. Had a great time at the Discworld Convention in September, as well as hanging around at a bunch of various book shows and cool colleagues in June at 3 different shows (thanks for letting me stay at your house cool people who let me stay at your houses!)

I also acquired a shiny gold suit, a number of new houses, visited the way cool Kaedy (whom I met at discworld) at the largest Ren Faire in the world, and even got a haircut at the haircut store.

I also did some other things, but I forget what they were. I'll have to make up a bunch of cool stuff when I write my autobiology.

Anything else I need to say? Can't think of it. Anybody interested in more about me, just ask. I'll make up some sort of answer that sounds good.

Here's to a fantastic 2010! 2009 was an odd one, that's for sure. Here's hoping the world doesn't fall apart more so than usual, I got stuff to do, and I need a society to do it in.

Cheerio!

Hey!

I thought you all might be slightly interested in this. My friends and I are working on a cosplay group for the upcoming Anime Convention in May. And myself? I perform sideshow. I perform in Mysterion's variety show on occassion, and we have our own small group act called the "Broken Doll Circus".

Now I know our outfits aren't the steamiest (I tend to fall towards more of the circus whimsy) but we're working on it.

Last night I was in a show as an Unbreakable Doll and her toymaker performing feats of "strength" and the bizarre in the following sideshow act.

Let me know what you think! <3

Contest! [Dec. 30th, 2009|06:46 pm]

binsybaby
sparkle - http://www.sparklee.com

until Jan 2d!

Ok so not only do I have most of my 500 dollars in Threadless store credit left, but I also have a ridiculous amount of street team points (even MORE store credit) and the number grows all the time!

So! I thought I would give 3 people the chance to get any shirt they want from Threadless, free of charge!

Heres how the contest will work:
You need to draw an "undesirable" person (fictional, real, or made up) riding a unicorn, or other mythical beast. You can interpret this any way you like, as long as it is generally PG!
Simply drawing a picture will enter you into the contest, so it does not have to be amazing! Just funny. After 5 PM (eastern time) on January SECOND I will randomly pick three winners!
One entry per person, please!
You must be at least 18 years of age because I don't want to get in trouble for sending a kid a shirt.

The top three will get any shirt they want from Threadless.com (if it's in stock) shipped to them free of charge. I *will* be accepting international entrants, I am just hoping the shipping won't be too much! It probably won't be a problem, though.

I would like to order the winners shirts by January Second or Third so I can take advantage of the $10 sale that's going on, so please have a shirt roughly in mind and maybe a backup shirt in case that one sells out.

Post a comment here with your entry drawing and your LJ username/or name, or the username/name of a friend if thats what you want to do!
If you are posting anonymously, please include an email address so I can contact you if you win!

This is also a good chance for people who have wanted to get a shirt from threadless, but couldn't because it does not take paypal. So hop to it, my lovelies!

Bring out your dead, bring out your dead... [Dec. 30th, 2009|05:19 pm]

kittyjimjams
Ugh okay so I have some kind of stomach bug on top of a horrible cold, and all I really want in the world is blankets and a quiet place, and maybe a glass of water.  I no longer think I'm going to throw up, which with this throat would be excruciating, but I have been awake for about 3 hours in the last 24 and my bed is calling again.

Tom has been WONDERFUL today and taken care of Mr Boo despite the snow outside, the fact that we have no food in so he had to take Wilf to the supermarket, and his mild hangover from the Dad's Night Out he went on yesterday.

I wanted to do one of those HOLY SHIT A DECADE memes and I still may but for now I am just catching up with some necessaries.

Firstly, [info]6street  did this meme and I volunteeredto do it too.  So, leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."

• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity.
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions!

1. If your adorable baby is old enough to speak, what was his first word? (If not, just tell me adorable things about your adorable baby!)
CAT.  Haha, which he was trained to say very early, since his grandma and grandad were determined to teach him "DOG" first.  Score one for the parents.  He is still quite proud of that one, he points at them and says "CAT!" if they walk past.

2. What was the first fandom you were ever involved in?
Avatar: the Last Airbender!  And specifically Jet/Zuko, which will forever be my one true hotter-than-firebending OTP.  I was pretty late to the party, I started watching at the beginning of Season Three, by which time Jet was already "dead" (EXCEPT HE DIDN'T DIE) and the fandom had been active for literally years, I believe - Nickelodeon managed to get the scheduling of the show ALL tied around their ear somehow, which I suppose is why I should not have been surprised at the total lack of respect the new movie has shown the source material.

...if you want to get me started on THAT subject, feel free, but I could go on for hours so perhaps I'll wait to be asked.  :)

3. Have you ever studied art formally, or how did you learn to draw so well?
Oh, well SHUCKS.  For a start, it is sweet of you to say that but I really don't draw that well!

I have a grade C in GCSE Art, which I took at about 16, and which was the lowest grade I recieved in all my exams.  My Art teacher took me aside and gently pointed out that I was clearly not an artist, and I believed her, and so it wasn't until about 2 - 3 years ago I started going to a local life drawing session sometimes and for a while I made it my ~*PROJECT*~ and practiced DAILY but lately not so much.  I got to a point where I was a little happier with my grasp of anatomy and expression, and I liked my own "style" such as it was, but I know nothing about colour theory, shading, framing, dynamism, composition, you name it basically.  And I've almost never drawn with anything except a graphics tablet pen or a mechanical pencil, and I erase and repeat, erase and repeat obessively, which is why my artwork is always so stiff-looking.

I still haven't decided if my Art teacher was right or not, but I deplore the fact that she felt I should be told so.  >:(

4. A matter of crucial importance: Sulu/Chekov or Chekov/Sulu?

Now hmm, okay, well.  Let's see.  I know that there are some relationships which work exclusively within a top/bottom framework but I don't think I could ever 'ship one.  I like there to be an interesting, balanced dynamic between two interesting people, and I enjoy the tension and tenderness that results from such a relationship (also I like the hot boysex too, obvs.).  With that in mind I get slightly squicked by fandom's obsession with who goes on which side of the /, because I feel it often implies an essential imbalance and a rigidity that feels unhealthy to me.  I like healthy relationships!  As a general rule I tend to picture Sulu usually being "on top" in bed, possibly because I identify more with Chekov?  I don't know.  But I like both ways, very definitely.  :)

5. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

The ability to turn invisible, no question.

--

And also, before I flake out again and fall into bed, allow me just to say, GO TEAM SULU/CHEKOV

I'm planning on adding some copper trim to it in order to make it more 'me.' And I fully intend on wearing it to see Sherlock Holmes this weekend. It's deliciously warm, and I'm always cold so that's something very impressive!

For future reference:

When visiting New Orleans, it is infinitely preferable not to start out ill and then get iller, forfeiting one's appetite and stamina in the process. So, now that I've discovered that, I'll be sure to do it the right way in the future.

On the other hand, these antibiotic eyedrops are lovely ...

Happy icon use is ironic (though it does cheer me somewhat ... awww, goofy Facilier)

Books, Books, and more BOOKS [Dec. 29th, 2009|02:32 pm]

[Current Music |Arcturus - Enter the Haggis]

Greetings, Clockwork Community~!

I, being quite unaccustomed to writing on the topic of myself for much more than a few sentences, will attempt to share my excitement concerning the upcoming week-or-so. Three items I thus relate:

I have been invited to attend a Book Club meeting held by one of my friends and, since the work is none other than Jane Eyre, I've seen it fit to give myself a few belated Christmas presents to take advantage of the only chance I've had in a long while to dress up. I have the boots and an assortment of accessories that pique my excessively large vanity, but I still need to find a decent jacket. I just hope I have time to finish the knitting I want.

A different friend recently brought my attention to an upcoming book series, which I consider delightfully steampunk: http://www.theinfernaldevices.com/
I refer you to the character page, at which point you may want to turn on your speakers and clap your hands with joy. At least I did.

Last but hopefully not least, I've finished the latest draft of my own book, entitled The Storytellers. It's been a work long in the making, and it's given me new life knowing that it's so near completion. I couldn't quite call it a steampunk fantasy, but it's definitely influenced by my interest in Victorian fashions and the written word. I would call it more bookpunk--abilities and machines, mechanical or otherwise, are driven by the energy expended on creating works of fiction.

Have a nice day.

Hello wonderful steampunk friends!

I'm a long time follower and lover of this community and all the wonderful creative people here and I was hoping to mine you all as a resource.

I'm in the beginning stages of writing a YAF steampunk novel set (at least partially) in Chicago. I know we have a strong Chicago group on here, so I was hoping some of you might know of some books that have a good history of Chicago. Especially any books that might have pictures and descriptions of the downtown and/or lakeside area.

Any suggestions would be super appreciated!

Thanks so muc!

I am desperately hungry.
The kitchen is three feet away.
The kitchen is stuffed with leftover food that I only need to microwave.

I just asked my mom to make me food.

This is really bad. Winter vacation has completely killed my usefulness. I go from being a completely independent, self-reliant young woman to...well, to the dude that still lives in his parent's basement.

hey folks, first post here.

im going to be in the business of make-up in the coming year, and i'd like to get a headstart on some practice. if your interested in being so kind as to let me practice and refine my make-up technique, and are in the atlanta/peachtree city area, please send a post, note, email, carrier pigeon, etc my way!

i've been in the costume making hobby for about 3 years, though i have yet to jump into the steampunk world. im very excited to experiment in some looks that will lend themselves well to steampunk costumes, so if you have a photoshoot, or upcoming event, i would like to be a part of it. :)

at this time i dont have any decent photos of my costume make-up ive done in the past, and im sorry for that. but you can help change that! contact me if you'd like to set something up. thanks!

Not only are they an incredibly talented band of costumers and performers, but they are just incredibly lovely people. My only regret is that I did not have an opportunity to work with the entire team. Hopefully, we can remedy that soon.

as well as being completely obsessed with steampunk fashion, i adore all kinds, especially haute couture,
and i just came across something AMAZING that i don't think has been posted here that i think you all might appreciate:

high-heels from Alexander McQueen's Spring 2010 runway collection... i pretty much died when i saw them and had to fawn over them somewhere. they are incredible.

kinda disappointed that the rest of the collection doesn't have a very Victorian feel, but the sci-fi aspect is definitely there and the fashion is still amazing if anyone is interested in more:

AND, an offer to other retailers....

Okay, first off, what did you scurvy bilge rats score in terms of plunder? Spill it!

Secondly, I realize I offered the League of Steam help with promotions as far as putting flyers in our Southern California parcels to promote their appearances, but I thought that I would offer that to the general steam public and do the same for any of you. Would be happy to put business cards, stickers, etc in our parcels and will try my absolute best if you want to limit it to an area or state.

I can't leave this offer open to too many because that would greatly increase packing times, but the offer is out there. Just email me through the site or my personal one, which is my first name followed by the site's url.

Okay, last thing, how are you all ringing in your New Year? I know many are going to the Edison but wonder what else is going on around the globe.
